US Soccer will introduce its new Grassroots Coaching Education Program in January, 2018. The course offerings are noted below. Coaches can earn their US Soccer Grassroots License by taking the on-line Common Introductory Course (once) and attending either the On-Line or In-Person version of the 4v4, 7v7, 9v9, or 11v11 course.  All In-Person and On-Line courses are four hours in length. There is no formal assessment in the Grassroots Pathway and playing background is not a requirement for certification.

Coaches must create a profile on the US Soccer Digital Coaching Center (DCC) to register for any US Soccer course.

US Soccer

In January 2018, US Soccer will phase out the "F" and "E" licenses.

The 36-hour "D" License will continue as the prerequisite to the National "C" license. Playing
ability is not a prerequisite for successful completion.

The "D" license is divided into two parts - the Instructional and Performance Phases - which must be separated by at least one season of active coaching (Deliberate Practice).

The "D" license requires the completion of "home" assignments through the US Soccer Digital Coaching Center (DCC)and includes a formal coaching assessment.

Parent-coaches without a playing background are encouraged to attend the U10/12 Course or NSCAA 7v7 / 9v9 Diploma to improve their soccer knowledge and coaching methods prior to attending the "D" License.

Alternative-Format "D" License
Ohio North offers an alternative format "D" license to provide motivated coaches with the opportunity to "practice" remotely with their own teams. The format requires 6 hours of classroom (lecture presentations and group discussion spread over two nights), followed by a period of "Deliberate Practice" at home under the mentorship of the state Technical Director or Assistant Technical Director.  The alternative format provides candidates with up to 12 months to compete the course.

The alternative "D" license seeks to maximize the benefits of "reality-based coaching" where candidates create training sessions around match-observations and seasonal goals. Session plans are submitted for feedback before video recording the training session. A self-reflection completes the cycle.  Candidates complete between one and four cycles during the period of deliberate practice.

NSCAA 7v7 / 9v9
The 7v7 / 9v9 Diploma is a 9 hour course designed to help Travel-level coaches better-understand game and practice management; and the abilities and motivations of their players.  The course includes both field and classroom presentations.

?Ohio North U10/12 Course
?The U10/12 course has been a staple for Travel-level coaches in Ohio North for well over a decade. Covering an extensive range of skills, tactics and game organizations, the course includes 11 hours of field sessions to complement three hours of on-line self-study.
